Gearing up for a fabulous Summer Retreat: Part 2

In our last Honest Blog article, "Gearing up for a Fabulous Summer Retreat," we mentioned perfectly lovely rooms that "Got No WOW."  In this article I will share a few tips on introducing into your space some vintage flair...

Re-think common or vintage items.

(continued...)

Do not be afraid to find them in consignment stores, re-sale shops, etc.   If you love iron pieces with great character, you are in luck. Antique malls, estate sales, re-sale shops and flea markets are full of interesting old pieces. Let nostalgic touches bring interesting appeal to your decor. They can be less-than-perfect. It's OK! It absolutely does NOT matter. When you incorporate these vintage objects into you decor, they add that WOW factor that those mass-produced, pre-fabbed pieces are missing.

If you love floral arrangements, but are convinced that you cannot put a stunner together, remove a stunning arrangement that you purchased from its original container and plop it in a piece of glassware that you love. Don't forget to fill in the bottom with moss, stones, etc. to hide the stems. To avoid that extra step, you could place the arrangement into a rustic old-world pottery piece. Maybe you have an heirloom pitcher that you have inherited. (Your mother or granny would love that! )

Let's say, while browsing in an antique mall you come across a funky vintage side-chair or lamp. It is the right color for a room that you are wanting to add some WOW to. Go for it! It will only add a little bit of personality and character to your space. Personality is the key. Allow yourself to make your displays more fun and meaningful. Try it by switching things around a little. Be brave -- show off your personality!
